Vikelaia Municipal Library of Heraklion is a historical library in Crete. Its main purpose is to provide important and useful sources of information for everyone.
The Library was founded in 1908 and was initially installed in the ground floor rooms of the Prefectural Store building. The scholar and cosmopolitan Dimitrios Vikelas, who was born in Syros in 1835, donated his rich and valuable library to the Municipality of Heraklion. Vikelas was very excited by the history of the town in general and especially by the treasures that were revealed during the archaeological excavations. Due to his donation, the Library was namesafter him.
In 1912, 1.130 volumes of books of the Heraklion Educational Association, which was founded in 1880 and collected several interesting books for Crete, were registered in the Vikelaia Library. In 1920, the Library was moved to the three ground floor northern rooms of the Town Hall until 1932, when it was moved to the Municipal Hall of Aktariki and remained there until the German occupation. The development of the Library began in the early 1980s with material acquisitions and archive maintenance.
Today, there are over 180,000 books in the Library's collections!
