The Gate of Saint Georgios

The Gate of Saint Georgios

On the eastern side of the city of Heraklion, there is the Gate of Saint Georgios. Its entrance is on Eleftherias Square, while the Gate’s exit to the port is on Ikarou Avenue. Inside the Gate, there is a 98 meters road, where pedestrians, horsemen, carts and carriages passed through it.

The Gate was also known as the "Lazaretto", as the city's sanatorium was also located there. They built a space on one side of the harbor, where sick travelers stayed in quarantine. In this way, they protected the city from epidemics. Many, however, never managed to pass the Gate of Saint Georgios.
