Dolphins Statue

3 Dolphins Statue is located in Kountourioti Square, at the end of 25th of August Street. The square is known as "18 Englishmen Square". This particular statue is a monument to the great tragedy that the city experienced on August 25, 1898. After the defeat of Greece in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and, while the Cretan Assembly had elected a committee to govern the island, the Turkish resisted this action by killing thousands of Cretans and destroying the city. Among the victims were 17 English soldiers and the English consul of the city, Lysimachus Kalokairinos.
